ADA Compliant Locker Locks Defined
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into legislation by President George H.W. Bush in 1900, is one of America’s most comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in mainstream American life. These basic rights include employment opportunities, the ability to purchase goods and services, and to participate in State and local government programs and services. Simply put, the ADA is “equal opportunity” law for people with disabilities.
In 2010, the United States Department of Justice revised regulations of the ADA including adopting accessibility standards called the “2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.” This new Standard requires 5% of school lockers meet ADA Specifications. In addition, all operable parts (the locks in use) must mee the following requirements:
- Shall be operable with one hand
- Shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist to operate
- Shall have a force required to activate of 5 lbf (22.2N) maximum
At the Lock Source, we stock every type of ADA lock to assure that students are able to use and operate their locker and that your school stays in compliance with the ADA Laws.
The Master Lock No. 1600 ADA and No. 1700 ADA Series Built-In Locks achieve these ADA Requirements through the use of a specially designed keyhead and the simple operation of the lock. The large flat key head makes the key easy to grip for those with extreme joint pain. For those with clenched fist dexterity, the flat keyhead fits securely between their fingers. The operation of the lock can be achieved by a simple bumping action to the ADA Key to both open and close the lock without the need of tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist.
As one of the only ADA-Compliant Locker Locks on the market, most schools today currently use the Master Lock ADA Padlocks with resounding effects. Contact The Lock Source today to make sure your students have the accessible locks they need and to make sure your school is in compliance with ADA Lock laws.
